Protar is SCSI, right ?
Then i have two recommendations:
1.) Check the IDs. No ID may be used twice.
2.) What size was the original disk in your Protar case ? It is possible that the hostadapter is not capable of handling a blocksize that a 540MB drive has (unlikely, but possible). So it would be good to see and check wether a disk of the original size can be used.
The TOS version number can be eithe read (word-read from address $000002) or by the date. My memory may be incorrect but this is what i recall:
1985 - TOS 1.00
1987 - TOS 1.02 (Blitter TOS)
1988 - TOS 1.04 (Rainbow TOS)
1989 - TOS 1.06 and 1.062 (STE)
1991 - TOS 2.05/TOs 2.06
