Good-Grief!!!!
All these answers and the OBVIOUS is missed.
The 800XL will go to BASIC when switched on, unless the option key is pressed,
which will disable BASIC in which case it will go too the built in diag if their is no floppy drive attached and ready to go.
You most likely have a malfunctioning KEYBOARD, that’s all, just open the unit up and disconnect the keyboard, then power the unit up without the keyboard attached.
If I am right, the computer will start normally and go to BASIC. If not then the VERY FIRST bank of memory is burnt out, just replace the first two chips and you will be back in business.
