I always wondered about my ATARI 800 XL, namely the custom chips. I thought that if Atari could create those custom graphics chips, why not the sound that my '64' mates were laughing at. I was suspicious about the Atari but I still gave in to the Commodore brainwashing and spent many hours tinkering with the 3 waveform SID.
I wasn't wrong about my suspicions.
I have recently discovered that you can create ANY waveform on the POKEY using the interupts serving (many times quicker than the vbl) POKEY. The results are astounding!
(does anyone know of any music produced this way?).
What I want to know is, why was this fantastic resource within the Atari never (?) used???? Back in '83, demo's of this capability would have lessened Commodores threat.
Why didn't Atari demonstrate and exploit this obvious advantage?
I'm planning to write a music editor that will allow access to the controls of POKEY. If one already exists, please let me know.
