The Backlight key did not simply disable the backlight, it turned off the LCD completely. The Lynx LCD required a light source from behind, it wasn't reflective. The Gameboy uses a reflective LCD which does not need a backlight. It's like the Compaq iPaq PalmPC and the Casio E115 PalmPC - the Casio needs the light on all the time (which sucks in bright light) but the iPaq has a reflective screen that can manage without.
Yeah - the Lynx let you turn the screen off to preserve battery life if the game was paused. It would work at other times, but it was kind of pointless, because you couldn't play the games like that...
