Erm, No, your wrong.

He did mention GEM as you stated, but GEM consists of 2 parts

1 - AES
2 - VDI

VDI Does the drawing on the SCREEN

GDOS is used for PRINTER Control, and extra FONTS, but GDOS is NOT needed for most things.

NVDI is pretty much a GDOS replacement, but it has the addes bonus of (a) making your Computer shit-hot in speed compared to normal, because it also replaces all, if not most graphic/text functions, and you can also use TrueType Fonts.

Apart from that, NVDI is GDOS as far as programs are concerned.
