Hi,
1. Well, I started with a harddisk-less ste many moons ago, so I'm used to have my setup spartan ;). In any case, it might be the case that some app is breaking the system, so booting clean with just nvdi there should be a good indication if the system itself is stable. Like I said before, sometimes I can drop to desktop even without nvdi and it can function pretty normally, so if you haven't tried it already, disable all apps and start enabling them one by one and you might find the curlpit.
