If you want to play around with Atari software (particularly games), a 1040 will do nicely. Note that they do not have a standard SCSI interface, so attaching a hard drive requires a now rare adapter. Fortunately, very little Atari software requires a hard drive.
Because of this, if you want to use an Atari as a full-fledged computer, I'd recommend a Falcon with at least 4 MB of RAM. The Falcon has good (about 2/3) games compatibility and happily attaches to an external SCSI hard drive without the need for an adapter.
