>>>I originally wanted to use a mega STE or TT because of the built in Hard drive.
Ok, thats a good reason I suppose, bu tthen you really should include the Falcon into that equation as the Falcon also has IDE too!
adding a 2.5" Drive will not take up any room when compared to adding a 3.5" SCSI
Also the Falcons Video output is NOT standard VGA and requires a small adapter. This wont be a problem if you are going to be doing internal soldering for that, but its somethign to consider.
The MegaSTE also will not be an option either, because you say you want colour? - If you wanted to turn a VGA SCreen into an Atari compatible and have colour, Im not entirely sure this is possible without being very lucky and finding an adapter?
So, your only choices are TT or FALCON and not an STE at all.
>>I'm not going to (personally) try to make the laptop. And my goal is not a 100% portable laptop (i.e. Mac or PC versions currently available). I know that size and hardware limitations will make it large.
Ok then, so in reality you are not going to make a laptop at all then? You are just going to make a fold away Desktop?
>>I personally would like to see somthink about the width and length of a current wide screen (full keyboard) laptop and about twice as thick.
Twice as thick is pushing it... 3 times maybe but not twice, and again the widescreen stops the STE completely and even if you did get the TT or Falcon onto the screen, you will find it either has borders that are bigger than the screen, or the screen will be too wide to view without eyeball pain.
>>>Power will probably be AC only.
At least thats the easy bit sorted out then.
>>But, how compatable is the STE and TT to the 520/1040ST and Mega ST? Will I have alot of incompatabilities with software ?
Ah, now you are talking sense..
To be totally honest with you, I have found the TT to be pretty much 99% compatible with applications, but as for games, I cannot comment as I have not bothered trying any out?
The 1% that didnt work for me, was CuBase 2 - V3 is fine, but v2 not.
And I stopped playing games on the ST teh day I got my fist Mono screen and I have never really cared all that much since. I have played a couple of games on the TT, dont get me wrong and they have been ok, but Im under the impression that not many do.
The only issue you will get really, is that the TT has, or can have 2 types of RAM...
STRAM and TTRAM.
The STRAM can be accessed by the DMA CHIO but the TTRAM cannot, and so, some apps dont like this, or maybe they access TTRAM to do DMA stuff, I dont know, Im rushed to type here so Im beign a bit crappy ( Wife wants me off the PC ) but thats basically what it is.
The Falcon has less compatibilty I feel but nearly everyone here will argue that one, and thats fine, but for me, I have had 3 falcons and not one has been a good reliable machine while my TT has run everything I have asked of it and has never failed me once.
I can only talk from my own experiance on that one.
Anyway, I will get back when she stops moaning ok?
